Voja Radovanovic "Theoretical Kaleidoscope "
Springer | 2007-12-10 | ISBN:038775251X | 98 pages | PDF | 2,2 Mb
This book is based on material taught in general and special theoretical physics courses given by I.B. Khriplovich at the Physics Department of Novosibirsk University, Russia. It is assumed that the reader is acquainted with fundamentals of classical mechanics, classical electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and (in the last chapter only) relativistic quantum mechanics. These fundamentals are not discussed explicitly but instead demonstrate, by solving concrete problems, how they work in practice. Indeed, according to Newton, in studies of science, examples are more useful than rules. To the best of Khriplovichs knowledge, most of these problems have never been discussed in textbooks, and it is believed that this is certainly true for the solutions presented. In all the texts discussions, reliance is on intuitive, qualitative arguments, the only exception in this respect being Chapter 4 which contains a consistent presentation of the semiclassical approximation in complex plane.

Harald Siegfried Friedrich "Theoretical Atomic Physics"
Springer | 2004-03-01 | ISBN: 3540641246 | 436 pages | PDF | 15,3 Mb
Atomic physics is a pioneering discipline at the forefront of theoretical and experimental physics. It has played a major role in advancing our understanding of chaotic systems. The 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for progress in cooling atoms to extremely low temperatures. This new edition of Theoretical Atomic Physics takes into account recent developments and includes sections on semiclassical periodic orbit theory, scaling properties for atoms in external fields, threshold behaviour of ionization cross sections, classical and quantum dynamics of two-electron atoms, and Bose-Einstein condensation of atomic gases. Moreover, for students there are 48 problems with complete solutions which makes this course the most thorough introduction to the field available.

Joaquim P. Marques de Sá, "Chance: The life of games and the game of life"
Springer | ISBN:3540744169 | March 1, 2008 | 236 pages | PDF | 5 MB
With its many easy-to-follow mathematical examples, this book takes the reader on an almost chronological trip through the fascinating and amazing laws of chance, omnipresent in the natural world and in our daily lives. Along the route many fascinating topics are discussed, such as: challenging probability paradoxes; "paranormal" coincidences; game odds; causes and effects; interpretation of opinion polls; winning chances as a game proceeds; the nature of randomness; entropy and randomness; randomness in life; algorithmic complexity and the undecidability of randomness; possibilities and limitations of learning the laws of a Universe immersed in chance events. This charming book will inform and entertain the scientist and non-scientist alike.

Alan Jeffrey / Hui Hui Dai, "Handbook of Mathematical Formulas and Integrals, 4th Edition"
Academic Press | ISBN: 0123742889 | January 2008 | 592 pages | PDF | 4.2 MB
The extensive additions, and the inclusion of a new chapter, has made this classic work by Jeffrey, now joined by co-author Dr. H.H. Dai, an even more essential reference for researchers and students in applied mathematics, engineering, and physics. It provides quick access to important formulas, relationships between functions, and mathematical techniques that range from matrix theory and integrals of commonly occurring functions to vector calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations, special functions, Fourier series, orthogonal polynomials, and Laplace and Fourier transforms. During the preparation of this edition full advantage was taken of the recently updated seventh edition of Gradshteyn and Ryzhiks Table of Integrals, Series, and Products and other important reference works. Suggestions from users of the third edition of the Handbook have resulted in the expansion of many sections, and because of the relevance to boundary value problems for the Laplace equation in the plane, a new chapter on conformal mapping, has been added, complete with an atlas of useful mappings.
- Comprehensive coverage in reference form of the branches of mathematics used in science and engineering
- Organized to make results involving integrals and functions easy to locate
